A GTA Film Adaptation Was Almost Made, Will Be Starring Eminem

The Grand Theft Auto series is often cited as the most popular open world game of all time. This is thanks to the unique gameplay offering which gives players the freedom to explore the open world sandbox map that is presented in an immersive manner.

Reportedly, this popularity almost led to an adaptation into a big screen film. Unfortunately, for various reasons the project was rejected by Rockstar Games as the developer.

Rockstar Games Rejects GTA Film Adaptation

Through a podcast program titled Bugzy Malone's Grandest Game, Kirk Erwin as a well-known game developer had time to talk with Dan Housers and Sam Housers as founders of Rockstar Games to work on a film adaptation of Grand Theft Auto.

The plan, the project is ready to be done by Tony Scott, who is known as the director of Top Gun. In addition, the work on the film also involved famous musicians and rappers, namely Eminem as the main actor. The discussion took place back in 2001, to be precise at the launch of Grand Theft Auto III.

Unfortunately, the two founders of Rockstar admit that they are not interested in the film adaptation project. According to him, the GTA franchise at that time was more successful as a game than a film. Even though they were rejected, Ewing and Sam Housers continued to discuss with each other about the possible scenarios that would be featured in the film.

Sales of GTA V Translucent 170 Million Coffee in the World

Even though the film adaptation could not be realized, the franchise's success continues to this day. Recent reports show that the last series, GTA V, has sold 170 million copies worldwide. This achievement is also said to be an improvement that has continued since the initial release.

Not only GTA, another game by Rockstar, namely Red Dead Redemption, also set a new sales record. Reports stated that the RDR series, both the first and its sequel, were able to break through sales of 70 copies since it was first released.

Currently, the popularity of GTA is still continuing. Rumor has it that GTA VI, which was previously entangled in leak cases, will soon be officially announced in the near future. It's no wonder that the release of the newest game can make the open world series even more successful in the future.
