Two electric bus models, Hyundai Elec City and Hyundai County EV, are scheduled to be launched on the Indonesian automotive market in 2024.
This follows a cooperation agreement between Hyundai Motor Company and INVI, a subsidiary of PT Indika Energy Tbk, in order to revolutionize public transportation in Indonesia.
This strategic collaboration is in line with the Indonesian government's electrification roadmap, to make a substantial shift to electric buses for public transportation. Hyundai and INVI have demonstrated strong track records of innovation and success in their respective industries.
"By combining the expertise of both companies, this will be a valuable asset in introducing new commercial electric vehicles to the Indonesian automotive market," said Young Tack Lee, President of Hyundai Motor ASEAN HQ in a written statement.
Hyundai Electric Bus Used for Transjakarta
The Hyundai Elec City is a large electric bus with a body length of 12 meters, while the Hyundai County EV is a medium-sized bus with a length of 8 meters.
Hyundai and INVI see a need for electric buses for public transportation in Indonesia, such as Transjakarta which has targeted the use of 100 percent electric vehicles (EV) by 2030 which is estimated to require 10,047 electric buses. "We are honored to be the main distributor of Hyundai electric buses in Indonesia, dedicated to building a significant electric vehicle presence in the market.
"Our commitment is to have a big impact on the commercial electric vehicle market, accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles, especially in the commercial sector," said Andreas Justiabel, President Director of INVI. Since 2017, Hyundai has led the public transportation industry with sales of more than 2,500 electric buses and 400 Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV) buses worldwide.
By leveraging these advantages, INVI from Indika Energy aims to provide a comprehensive solution and create a seamless EV ecosystem by developing its own Electric Charging Station (SPKLU).
Hyundai and Indika Energy's INVI are set to launch additional commercial electric vehicle models in the near future. For INVI, it is also actively contributing to the development of an environmentally friendly public transportation system in Indonesia's new capital, Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN).
Marketed for ASEAN Also
This partnership between Hyundai and INVI from Indika Energy is not only happening in Indonesia, but is also developing commercial electric vehicles in the ASEAN region.
"Our next initial focus will be on Malaysia and Singapore, which are driving the growth of electric vehicles with advanced infrastructure and strong government support, including zero emissions regulations.
"Further expansion will be carried out in the Philippines, considering the large market potential and promising opportunities," said Young Tack Lee.
To ensure the sustainability of electric buses and commercial electric vehicles in the ASEAN region, Hyundai will build an EV value chain in Indonesia, positioning it as an EV hub in ASEAN.
This includes building a battery cell factory to reduce manufacturing costs, increase market competitiveness, and benefit from local luxury tax exemptions by achieving the targeted Domestic Component Level (TKDN).
The introduction of electric buses in the ASEAN region will not only improve public transportation systems but also improve infrastructure and charging stations.
This initiative not only creates a conducive environment for business, but also encourages the use of renewable energy in the transportation sector, accelerates the transition from traditional engines to zero-emission vehicles, and actively seeks funding to develop a robust electric vehicle ecosystem in each country.
This is in line with Hyundai Motor Company's commitment to support the ASEAN Leaders' Declaration on Developing Regional Electric Vehicle Ecosystem in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, switch to cleaner energy, decarbonize land transportation, and increase energy security, ultimately aiming to achieve net zero emissions.
