Hankook iON Race, the mainstay tire for the 2023 Formula E racers in the heat of the Jakarta track


The Hankook iON Race was used as a tire in the 10th and 11th ABB FIA Formula E races which were held from 3 to 4 June 2023 at the Ancol circuit, Jakarta International E-Prix.

A tire manufacturer from Gingseng Country, Hankook Tire prepared the iON Race as a tire that can withstand all seasons. As information, Hankook itself is the sole tire supplier replacing Michelin in the ninth season of ABB FIA Formula.

"Hankook iON Race is designed to master the various challenges faced by racers in races in ABB FIA Formula E. This tire has faced all climates including even extreme conditions very well so that it supports racers when driving the vehicle," said Yoon Soo Shin, President Director of PT Hankook Tire Sales Indonesia (HTSI), Friday (2/6).

Felix Kinzer, Hankook Communications Director, said that very high temperatures of around 35 degrees Celsius and humidity of more than 80 percent were factors the team had to consider when working with the Hankook iON Race.

30 Percent of the Hankook iON Race Is Made from Environmentally Friendly Materials

Hankook iON Race is specially developed for electric racing cars. In the manufacture of about 30 percent based on environmentally friendly materials. Even so, the material used has excellent durability for a Formula E racing car while maintaining driving performance.

"This tire is also specially designed to have good durability. After the race ends, Hankook will recycle all racing tires used to support environmental sustainability," said Apriyanto Yuwono, National Sales Manager PCR PT Hankook Tire Sales Indonesia.

ABB FIA Formula E only relies on eight tires or two sets per championship. Racing teams are allowed to use one tire for dry and wet conditions as well as to save energy.

The layout of the Jakarta International e-Prix Circuit was built specifically for Formula E racing inspired by the Horse and running clockwise. In addition to the 600-meter start or finish straight, the 2,370-meter circuit also features slow, medium and very fast corners.

The first corner of the Jakarta E-Prix circuit is a long right turn, which has the opportunity for drivers to overtake. The Hairpin, or turn 13, is the heaviest braking zone on the circuit and is followed by a sharp turn to the right. Turn 16 is outside and is the activation zone for Attack Mode.
