For the electric car market, the Ioniq 6 is claimed to be more powerful than the Ioniq 5. The technology behind the streamlined design is revealed. The Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) which is also used by Ioniq 5 is maintained. It can accommodate a variety of battery sizes, a choice of rear-wheel drive (RWD) or four-wheel (AWD), a flat cab floor and ideal proportions for an EV.
Attractive Aerodynamic Design
Very different from the retro hatchback-themed Ioniq 5, the Ioniq 6 is a coupe sedan with smooth body grooves like it was born from the air passage. The Electrified Streamliner design language is designed to split the wind as smoothly as possible.
Cod (Coefficient of Drag) number is only 0.21, at the same time crowning it as one of the most aerodynamic cars in the world. Small details are so noticed. For example, embedded doorknobs, digital mirrors. Not referring to the invisible parts of the eye, such as under the flat, also makes the wind refuse to gather in that area. Everything should flow smoothly until it comes out.
The characteristic of E-GMP is that it has a very long wheelbase. It stretches to 2,950 mm, very abnormal for a sedan. Indeed 50 mm shorter than the Ioniq 5, the overall dimensions of the Ioniq 6 are 4,855 mm in length, 1,880 mm in width and 1,495 in height. The body composition does look strange, but behind it is capable of embedded competent EV technology.
Spacious and Eco-Friendly Cabin
Looking into the interior, many parts remind Ioniq 5. For example the steering wheel with four Morse code dots as a symbol, then two 12-inch monitors lined up for all information, entertainment and settings. Minimalist, not many embedded many buttons. The impression of the concept is still so pronounced. Exactly like the Ioniq 5 too.
The most important part, how to create environmentally friendly materials. The upholstery is made of recycled PET and the carpet is made of fishing net. Even so, comfort is still a priority, the seats are designed to be 30 percent thinner than conventional cars, guaranteed to remain comfortable and able to increase space. Relaxation Comfort mode is also in the front seats.
Hyundai designed the Ioniq 6's cabin to be more than just the space of an ordinary vehicle. But it can also be used as a walking office. The important point comes from the center console that can be shifted. Can be used as a laptop mat, there is even a "smart table" for various purposes.
Battery and Power Options Roaming
Thanks to E-GMP as well, can enter different battery sizes. Hyundai offers the Ioniq in two options: 53 kWh and 77.4 kWh. Standard drive to the rear wheels via a single motor. Or if you want a different sensation, you can choose a two-motor which simultaneously drives all four wheels (AWD). The top variant produces a total power of 320 hp (324 PS/239 kW) and a maximum torque of 605 Nm.
The acceleration capability is equivalent to a sports sedan. The AWD variant with a large battery is capable of sprinting from rest to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds. While there is no definite data for the RWD version, it is likely to be in the 7 second range like the Ioniq 5.
Unexpectedly, the distance test results from the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) are further than the Ioniq 5. For the 77.4 kWh Long Range version and single motor, it can reach 610 km. Far beyond the Ioniq 5 which is only 507 km. Hyundai dares to claim the most basic configuration will be the most efficient car. Means the small battery version and 18-inch rims, the energy consumption is less than 14 kWh/100 km.
The 400V/800V electrical construction is the same as the Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60. The same goes for the 350 kW DC fast charging method, which allows charging the battery from 10 to 80 percent in just 18 minutes.
Safety Device
Ioniq 6 certainly contains a complete list of features and driving assistance. In maintaining the safety of all passengers, Hyundai SmartSense continuously monitors the surrounding area and helps provide more safety from potential hazards while driving. The package consists of Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), Lane Keeping & Lane Following Assist (LKA & LFA), Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA), Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM), Driver Attention Warning (DAW) , Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA), Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go Function (SCC w/ S&G) and High Beam Assist (HBA).
The Highway Driving Assist II (HDA II) feature will also be available. Combines adaptive cruise control with various sensors to keep the car in the middle of the lane and maintain a distance from the vehicle in front. The key to the latest development of HDA II compared to HDA I, is able to keep the car position tighter.
Start Production September 2022
Hyundai has not officially released the Ioniq 6 to the market. Production itself just started next September. Possibly for the Korean domestic market first, followed by the global model a few months later. Likely to arrive in the US market mid-2023 with an estimated price starting at $40,000
