Shopee started to apply additional fees when users transact on the platform. This additional fee is called a "service fee" at the amount of IDR 1,000 per transaction. This service fee will appear every time a user purchases or every checkout from the Shopee site or application.
This fee began to be charged to consumers as of October 23 last. According to the company's description, service fees are "costs used to develop Shopee technology to better serve Customers".
With this new policy, the details of the fees that customers need to pay when making transactions include product costs, shipping costs, service fees and handling fees when using certain payments. Details of the service fee will also be listed on the checkout page, as are other fees.
Quoted from the official Shopee website, Tuesday (10/25/2022), service fees are applied to all products including digital products on the platform. The digital products in question are in the top-up category (pulse/data), bills, entertainment, transportation and accommodation or others.
However, there are some digital products that are excluded, such as the category of Finance, Zakat, and Donations. So, when paying zakat through Shopee, for example, customers do not need to pay service fees. Meanwhile, if the customer cancels the order, the service fee will also be returned according to the conditions determined by the company.
The service fee itself has been adopted by a number of technology-based companies such as Tokopedia, Gojek, Grab and so on. Thus, Shopee adds to the list of companies that apply service fees in Indonesia.
Tokopedia also charges a service fee
Tokopedia also collects a service fee as of 3 August. The amount is the same as Shopee, which is IDR 1,000 per transaction.
This fee is applied to every transaction, whether made through the Tokopedia website or application with any payment method without a minimum purchase nominal. "Tokopedia continues to strive to improve the quality of the user experience.
One way is to apply an application service fee of IDR 1,000 per August 3, 2022 for every physical product transaction through the Tokopedia website or application," said Head of External Communications Tokopedia Ekhel Chandra Wijaya.
However, this fee is excluded for financial products, digital products, TopAds, zakat, and donations, except for gold rounding transactions, donations, or credits included in the purchase of physical products.
