Incentives Drive Electric Car Sales Growth in Thailand
One of the factors for the high sales of BEV electric cars in Thailand is the provision of subsidies and other incentives.
The local government has issued quite a number of new regulations which make the selling price of electric cars the same as conventional engine cars or even cheaper.
Throughout 2023, the subsidy value for electric cars per unit will be 70,000-150,000 baht depending on the battery capacity.
For passenger vehicles that use batteries with a capacity of 10-30 kWh, a subsidy of 70,000 baht per unit or approximately IDR 31 million is given.
Meanwhile, for passenger vehicles that use batteries with a capacity of more than 30 kWh, they will receive a subsidy worth 150,000 baht/unit.
Then the Thai government also provides incentives for electric commercial vehicles produced locally and using batteries with a capacity of more than 30 kWh, with a subsidy amount of IDR 66 million.
Apart from that, there are also regulations for manufacturers who import electric cars to Thailand, they must limit the number of imports and divert them to local production.
Because of this, more and more Chinese brands are starting to produce electric cars in Thailand.
