Get to know BYD's E-Platform 3.0 and 8 in 1 Powertrain Technology
Before you are interested in buying a car, maybe you should first get to know BYD's E-Platform 3.0 technology which is used for all BYD electric cars which are now being sold in Indonesia.
As we know, BYD is starting to explore the domestic market with three products at once, namely BYD Dolphin, BYD Atto 3, and BYD Seal. And the three electric cars from China all use E-Platform 2.0 technology which is also applied to other BYD cars.
4 Advantages of E-Platform 3.0
1. Safety
The first is about safety, because this platform has been designed in such a way that it allows the battery, in this case the BYD Blade Battery, to be attached to the body.
The advantages of implementing this system could result in BYD being able to develop another system to help control the temperature level in the battery, as well as increase the strength (rigidity) of the entire vehicle.
2. Design
The second advantage of the Build Your Dreams platform is that it allows manufacturers to position the battery and electric motor slightly lower.
The effect is, the designer division of this manufacturer is given the freedom to create a design for the exterior and interior that, apart from taking into account aesthetics, also takes into account the comfort and space of the passengers.
This is what is not surprising, because in appearance, BYD cars look attractive and exotic and also in the cabin area they still feel spacious.
3. Efficiency
The implementation of lower batteries in the E-Platform system was also mentioned by Mikami as allowing BYD to integrate the motor and its control system in one piece.
This step makes the overall weight of the car lighter, not to mention that the Blade Battery is also lighter and thinner than other types of batteries. For example, he said, the battery on the BYD Dolphin which has 44.9 kWh weighs only 1,250 kg.
With a lighter battery and platform system, it will certainly increase the efficiency of using battery power in the car, which will result in longer distances.
4. Intelligence
The use of E-Platform 3.0 in this vehicle allows various control systems to be integrated, so that for the driver there is something like a personal driving assistance system to make it easier to monitor the condition of the vehicle using just one easy-to-read tool.
Mikami, who had experience in several other automotive manufacturers before joining BYD, admitted that a driver assistant system like this was not found in other brands of electric vehicles.
E-Platform 3.0 Also Makes Batteries Safer
Apart from using E-Platform technology, BYD also applies an 8 in 1 Electric Powertrain system. What's that?
Mikami explained that as the name suggests, there are eight different components that have different tasks, but are integrated in one component.
The eight components are:
- Junction Box
- BSM (Battery Management System)
- DC-DC
- Transmission
- OBC (On Board Charger)
- Drive Motor
- VCU (Vehicle Control Unit)
- MCU (Motor Control Unit)
Each of these components has its own job, which essentially boils down to the task of monitoring the temperature of the battery in the vehicle. For example, for the OBC component, it will be tasked with monitoring the electric current when the user plugs in an AC (fast charging) charger. Then in this 8 in 1 system, BYD also has another component called the Thermal Management System.
Its job is to regulate the temperature in the battery when it needs to be lowered when the battery starts to experience an increase in temperature, and when the battery needs to be warmed to the ideal temperature if it feels too cold, for example due to snow.
This battery temperature monitoring system is also not a Thermal Management System, but on top of the Blade Battery cell layer, a Heat Exchanger component is also inserted.
Its function is to monitor the stability of the electric current when the vehicle owner is charging, so that the electric power entering the battery will remain stable, which means the battery will still be able to produce better performance with a longer service life.
Now, this battery component is also equipped with Heat Pump technology whose job is to provide a signal to the Thermal Management System when it detects excessive heat in the battery during repeated fast charging.
The battery technology with this system is considered by Mikami to have proven successful in anticipating damage due to battery storage, for example due to user behavior that frequently charges the battery to 100 percent or leaves it until it runs out to 0 percent.
He also said that for BYD electric car users who may have had an accident and the incident damaged the battery, it is recommended that they replace the battery completely, not just replace the damaged battery cell components.
"If an accident occurs and the condition concerns the battery part, then the question arises whether we can just replace the damaged cell part, we do not recommend that," he stressed.
This is because the battery consists of a number of components that are integrated with each other and have been designed with the best packaging so that water or dust cannot enter.
However, because BYD is a technology-based company, Mikami said that BYD's E-Platform 3.0 technology, 8 in 1 Powertrain system, including the Thermal Management System, and Blade Battery are produced in house at their factory.
"So we can create these components in a compact size according to our wishes, and also because all of this is produced in our own factory, we can reduce production prices," said Mikami.
