Hit by Scandal, Daihatsu Indonesia Sales Continue to Rise 12.5 Percent

Hit by scandal, Daihatsu Indonesia sales continue to rise 12.5 percent

In the midst of scandal issues, sales of Daihatsu Indonesia in early 2024 will remain strong. Yes, the scandalous issues announced by the principal of Daihatsu Motor in Japan some time ago, including the revocation of the certification permit for the Daihatsu Gran Max, apparently did not immediately affect its business lines in Indonesia.

This can be seen from Daihatsu sales in Indonesia in January 2024 which were recorded at 16,976 units or an increase of 12.5 percent, compared to December 2023 when only 15,085 units were sold.

Marketing & Customer Relations Division Head of PT Astra International Tbk Daihatsu Sales Operations, Tri Mulyono, hopes that Daihatsu's current sales achievements can contribute to encouraging sales growth, and that the national automotive market in 2024 can continue to grow.

"We would like to thank customers for their trust, so that Daihatsu can start sales in early 2024 with positive results," said Tri in a written statement, Saturday (10/2/2024). Tri further stated that Daihatsu is committed to providing the best offers and services to customers.

Sigra Continues to Support Daihatsu Sales in Indonesia

Of Daihatsu's entire sales volume in January 2024, the largest contribution is dominated by three mainstay products. In first position, there is the Daihatsu Sigra (Specifications | News) which sold 5,319 units, or contributed around 31.3 percent.

Meanwhile, in second place was Gran Max PU (Pick Up) which sold 4,146 units or contributed 24.4 percent. Meanwhile, Daihatsu Terios (Specifications | News) achieved sales of 2,267 units or contributed 13.4 percent.

Meanwhile, if you compare sales per model between January 2024 and December 2023, the highest percentage increase in sales was for the Ayla model, which increased

by 152 percent, to 2,023 units from the previous 1,335 units. Then followed by Gran Max Mini Bus (MB) by 137 percent to 1,293 units, and Terios by 134 percent to 2,267 units.

Daihatsu Scandal

As is known, in 2023 a case of safety test manipulation involved Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd and had an impact on Daihatsu in Indonesia.

Yes, at the end of December 2023, Toyota and Daihatsu have conducted an investigation and found that there were 174 new cases on 64 models in 25 different test items, including Daihatsu models marketed by Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota), Mazda Motor Corporation (Mazda), and Subaru Corporation.

This has dragged down PT Astra Daihatsu Motor (ADM), because it is one of the largest production bases that produces and sells it to export markets in a number of countries, and is often sold under the auspices of Toyota.

Therefore, after the announcement of the Toyota and Daihatsu scandal in Japan, production of Daihatsu cars made in Indonesia for the export market was temporarily stopped.

Nevertheless, it didn't take long for PT ADM to state that the products marketed in Indonesia had no problems. This made PT ADM resume production and exports to a number of destination countries.
