Apple has launched its most recent chip, the M2. The arrival of this one processor is considered a threat that should not be underestimated by Microsoft in the Windows-based computer business.
Since introducing Mac computers with the M1, Apple has found great momentum in the computer business. The more powerful M2, on the other hand, has debuted on the new MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro, and is expected to increase that momentum.
As quoted PISBON™ Computer ArtWork© from CNBC, in 2021 Apple will have a market share of 7.9% in world PC shipments according to Gartner, while Windows still dominates with a figure of up to 81.8%.
However, the arrival of the M2 is projected to make the Mac more attractive to consumers. In 2026, it is estimated that Apple's market share will reach 10.7% and Windows will decline to 80.5%.
"The overwhelming consumer response to M1-based Macs helped drive a 15 percent year-over-year revenue increase despite supply difficulties," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in April. The M1 and M2 chips are in demand among others because they make the battery in laptops very durable, as well as powerful.
Microsoft itself still earns substantial revenue from licensing its Windows operating system to Dell, HP, Lenovo and other computer manufacturers. The Windows business accounts for 7.5% of all Microsoft revenue.
Indeed, Windows will still be dominant for a long time. But the situation could be different if for example Apple launched a MacBook SE which was sold at an affordable price, between 800 or 900 dollars.
"MacBook SE computers at a much more affordable price point will be big enough to disrupt Windows," said Patrick Moorhead, analyst at Moor Insights and Strategy.
