Toyota Hilux Soon Turns Into Hybrid, Next Fortuner

Toyota announced that it will add hybrid technology to the Toyota Hilux engine starting in 2024. The goal is to create a Hilux model that is more fuel efficient than current engines. The technologies that will be added are batteries, electric motor generators, and supporting components.

"We continually strive to reduce the fuel consumption of our vehicles to help reduce ongoing costs for customers, as well as help reduce our environmental impact. The addition of 48-Volt battery technology to our best-selling vehicle line will certainly contribute to this," said Sean Hanley Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations of Toyota Australia through his written statement.

Diesel engine 2.8 Toyota Hilux Plus Hybrid

Mr. Hanley said that this new technology would later be combined with the 2.8-liter turbo diesel engine owned by Hilux.

Combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission system, the generator technology in this car will also have a task similar to the Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) system on Suzuki.

Namely replacing the performance of a conventional engine to supply the electrical system for AC, audio and other functions, when the car is stopped in a traffic jam.

In other words, Hilux will have an Auto Start/Stop engine feature, whereby the performance of this system will be supplied from the installed generator and battery.

The More Fuel Efficient But Still Tough

Mr. Hanley explained that this hybrid technology could degrade the Toyota Hilux's fuel consumption by around 10 percent.

However, the addition of 48-Volt technology will not impact Hilux's ability as a 4x4 pickup that is tough on offroad terrain.

"Not only will this new technology improve fuel efficiency, but customers will also benefit from increased performance on and off-road. This makes the HiLux even more attractive for weekend trips or outback outings," he said.

The plan is that the Toyota Hilux hybrid will be applied to the SR5 4x4 and Rogue Double Cabin models.

Toyota Fortuner Can Also Change Hybrid

If Hilux will soon get hybrid technology, of course it's only a matter of time for the Fortuner to also apply similar technology.

This is because the Hilux and Fortuner share the same platform, and use the same 1GD FTV VNT Intercooler diesel engine as well.

If the Hilux hybrid is launched in 2024, the Fortuner may follow late next year or early 2025.
