BMW Motorrad is reportedly ready to release the M 1000 R next year. This was known after the German manufacturer registered a trademark in Switzerland by listing the M 1000 R. This naked bike model received the M Performance package to accompany the M 1000 RR which had already been launched in 2020. In the same document it will also introduce the new S 1000 RR. with revisions in the engine sector.
Despite being hit by the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, that didn't stop BMW Motorrad from making a breakthrough. Evidenced by the launch of the M 1000 RR sportbike. And most recently, it was reported that the House of Munich was again giving M Performance treatment to other products. It is expected to be a top-class naked bike that takes the design from the S 1000 R and has almost the same performance as the M 1000 RR.
Although there are no detailed pictures of the motorbike, the documents listed reveal a little about the main specifications. The power output of the M 1000 R is 207 hp at 13,750 rpm. That figure is actually not equivalent to the M 1000 RR which recorded 212 hp at 14,500 rpm. While the regular version of the S 1000 RR 2023 superbike which reportedly gets an update on the engine is claimed to be 204 hp at 13,500 rpm.
If true, that power means higher than the Ducati Streetfighter V4 or MV Agusta Brutale 1000. That power jump is able to put the M 1000 R at the top of the naked bike class. It is also claimed to be faster than its competitors. Its top speed reaches 174 mph (280 kph). While the regular version is only 158 mph (254 kph) and 14 mph less than the much more aerodynamic S 1000 RR superbike. Even so, the engine has the exact same specifications.
The M 1000 R's registered peak torque is 83.3 lb-ft (113 Nm) at 11,000 rpm. That's the same as the current S 1000 RR. The S 1000 R recorded 84 lb-ft (113.8 Nm) at 9,250 rpm. This suggests the M 1000 R's 999cc engine will have the same tuning as the S 1000 RR, not the more streetable S 1000 R of today. It also indicates the M model will adopt BMW's ShiftCam variable valve timing system.
Although the M 1000 R approval paper does not specify the dimensions. The overall length is said to be slightly reduced, but the wheelbase is almost an inch longer than the S 1000 R. It's also about 1.5 inches wider than the S 1000 R and 2.5 inches taller. That shows there is a change in bodywork and riding position.
To compete with its competitors, a set of winglets may be added. And maybe there's a small visor above the headlights to deflect wind blasts when the bike hits 170 mph.
Like the M 1000 RR, the M 1000 R also gets wider wheels than the base model. The rear tire is likely to be a size 200 instead of the 190/55-17 on the current model. In addition there are indications that it gets carbon wheels similar to the M 1000 RR.
Unfortunately BMW Motorrad was not present at the EICMA exhibition, Milan. But the bike could appear one month early at the Intermot event which takes place in October 2022.
